History
Prague has a wealth of architectural treasures, one of which is the house "U tri pstrosu" (At the Three Ostriches). The house stands by the Charles' Bridge. This stone bridge, one of jewels of Gothic architecture, was built by Charles IV, the Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor. The original house stood on the pier of the earlier Judith Bridge, which was swept away by a flood. During the time of the Hussite upheaval it was burnt down, and then built by Jan Fuchs, a supplier of ostrich feathers, who had the front 11 of his house decorated with ostriches. However, legend says that during the rule of Charles I V a foreign delegation carrying three ostriches as a present for the Emperor spent a night in the house. These three ostriches became the symbols of the house in the centuries that followed. It was the first coffee house in Bohemia, miling coffee brought by a Greek, Deodastus Damascenus. The smell of roasted coffee added to the atmosphere of the Prague area of Malá Strana.
