WiFi network in Prague

Project „Building a WiFi Network for Electronic Communication Between the Citizens and the Authorities of the City of Prague“ is prepared by the Prague City Hall. Co-financed from EU funds (ERDF, JPD2/SPD2 program for Prague). Pilot will cover 1/3 of the City area (limited by JPD2/SPD2 rules), 171 distribution points connected to the fiber backbone, schools and administration buildings and another 409 hotspots, altogether 580 AP, using WiFi mesh.

Main project objectives are:
• availability of on-line services and BB connectivity (low cost for citizens)
• free on-line access to services of public administration
• increasing use of el. communications and computer literacy, digital inclusion, employment policy
• infrastructure for innovative city services (transport, security, emergency, tourism)
• mobility (for all, outdoor services)

Prague already has a publicly-sponsored free Wi-Fi zone in one of its districts,Prague 5,and City Hall wants to widen the service throughout the whole city in order to promote e-government because this would streamline many municipal services such as license applications.The government is aiming for a network with a 64 kilobytes per second connection".
